Bush administration forces Uganda to take giant step backwards with AIDS

It seems as if the Bush Administration can be counted on to turn something that was a success into a failure. Before the widowmaker came to power the United States enjoyed a surplus. As soon as Bush became the selected president the surplus changed into a huge deficit. Well he's doing it again. Uganda was the most successful African nation to combat AIDS. This was possible because of a condom distribution system. Apparently the Bush administration and its religious fanatic supporters coerced the Ugandan leaders to make condoms unavailable to those who wish to purchase them. Because of condom use the percentage of people dying from AIDS was much lower than that of neighboring African nations. From 1990 to 1997 Masaka, Uganda diminished the number of AIDS cases from 4.5 million to just under a million in the 13 to 19 age group. With condoms being made purposely unavailable the numbers of AIDS cases in Masaka and other Ugandan communities will certainly rise. The Health, A Key To Prosperity website reports "Uganda's success in reducing high HIV infection rates is the result of high-level political commitment to HIV prevention and care, involving a wide range of partners and all sectors of society. Same-day results for HIV tests and social marketing of condoms and self-treatment kits for sexually transmitted infections, backed up by sex education programmes, have helped reduce very high HIV infection rates.
Uganda, one of the first countries in sub-Saharan Africa to experience the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS and to take action to control the epidemic, is one of the rare success stories in a region that has been ravaged by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. While the rate of new infections continues to increase in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Uganda has succeeded in lowering its very high infection rates. Since 1993, HIV infection rates among pregnant women, a key indicator of the progress of the epidemic, have been more than halved in some areas and infection rates among men seeking treatment for sexually transmitted infections have dropped by over a third." The ultra conservative Christian religious community headquartered in the United States spread the word in Uganda that condoms were not effective. It is also believed that Ugandans would receive more U.S. financial assistance if they went along with the no condom policy. As a result no one was permitted to buy condoms for an indefinite period of time. Condoms stored in excessively high temperatures will be ineffective. These condoms were sent to Sweden to be tested and of course they would be rejected when exposed to high temperatures. This is just one more example of how Bush policies are not just destroying the United States: they are destroying the world.

Fail to plan, plan to fail

At least 40,000 homes are under water in the New Orleans area because of hurricane Katrina. Many members of the Louisiana National Guard find themselves in a position of not being able to help because they are in an illegal war in Iraq. New Orleans also is in need of plywood (which not that long ago was in plentiful supply). The plywood like a substantial part of the Louisiana national guard is in Iraq, leaving the people of Lousiana unprepared for a natural disaster. The Bush administration should take the blame for this horrendous blunder, but this is a president who cannot think of any mistakes that he has made. The first step in solving a problem is to admit that there is one. The president and his administration seem incapable of doing this. The three states hit hardest by hurricane Katrina are Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, all are "red" states. Eventhough several red states have turned blue over the past three months, these three states are not among them. Louisiana has had minimal movement (See "The political landscape has changed 8-18-05), Alabama and Mississippi remain staunchly red. The man they chose to lead the country has forsaken them. No other president to my knowledge has ever taken a five week vacation. When Mr. Bush decided to go to Louisiana disaster had already struck. This hurricane was predicted well in advance. To this date one Mississippi county has eighty dead......and still counting. The estimated number of dead in New Orleans is into the thousands. The money that was given to the rich for massive tax cuts could have been used to help the hurricane victims. These three states, among the nations poorest continue to vote against their own self interest. Will this terrible tragedy change their minds......I doubt it. The same short-sightedness evident in Mr. Bush can also be found in Mr. Rumsfeld, the woefully incompetent Secretary of Defense, who convinced the president and the nation that we could win this war....on the cheap. Mr. Rumsfeld didn't tell our troops about the harmful effects of depleted uranium. The same weapons created in the United States that destroy Iraqis also destroy U.S. soldiers. Our soldiers were sent into battle without proper armor. Army personnel that signed up as cooks found themselves in combat. Mr. Rumfeld like Mr. Bush failed to plan, so he planned to fail, and as a result the nation suffers. Now Mr. Bush tells us that we will have to lower our expectations for Iraq a little. He says that the objective of creating a western style democracy may have been a just a little too ambitious. As a result the new Iraq constitution looks like it will be everything Osama Bin Laden wanted. First of all it will be an Islamic state not a secular one. Mr. Bush was so quick to point out how women in Iraq would have even more rights than what they had under Saddam Heussein and in Afghanistan women would enjoy equal rights for the first time, well neither of those goals and been met, in fact it seems that when it comes to women's rights both countries are going in the opposite direction. The American invasion destroyed Iraqi infrastructure and did absolutely nothing for the Iraqi people, who were accustomed to electricity and basic western conveniences. If you destroy another country for the promise of "democracy" then you should make all repairs. Iraqis had the technological know how to do it themselves but the US government didn't permit them because they wanted all the US companies to make all the money. Companies like Titan and Caci had their employees do jobs that were adequately done by our soldiers, but they were allegedly paid many times more for doing the same job. This leads us to the continued abuse of the American taxpayer by companies like Halliburton. When a woman of conscience and strong religious conviction (Bunnetine Greenhouse) exposed these improprieties she was fired. Mr. Rumsfeld did not plan on U.S. soldiers telling their friends and family about the outrageous abuse of Iraqi prisoners of Abu Graib. He did not plan of them sending graphic photos to friends and family in the U.S. as confirmation of wrong doing. Torture as a means of getting information is ineffective because the person who is being tortured will tell you anything to stop inflicting pain. Lower level soldiers have bared the brunt of the criticism for these terrible acts when it seems obvious now that these orders came from above. We know this know because of the statements of the woman who was in charge of Abu Graib, Janet Karpinski, who emphatically recalls how she was deliberatedly excluded from certain activities by superiors. Donald Rumsfeld didn't realize the purpose of the Geneva accords. If you treat your enemy's soldiers in a civil manner than he will do the same for you. Is it a surprise that the Caci or Titan mercenaries were fried and hung on bridges by Iraqis? This is just another example of failing to plan. But how long is it going to take for the American people to open their eyes? The American people have been victimized by a predatory administration with world wide domination in mind. This corporate friendly administration is making the middle class pay more for social services while giving the rich a free ride. Cindy Sheehan is demanding answers. How long is it going to take the Democratic party to step up to the plate and act like an opposition party? How long are we going to put up with Tom Delay tactics of extortion and intimidation? How long are we going to accept fixed elections? Well just like Mr. Bush and Mr. Rumsfeld if we fail to plan, we will plan to fail.

Racial Profiling and Social Security?

Recently I received an e-mail from Tavis Smiley. Whether this is the famous news commentator or not I don't know. The message was that the U.S government is using the Social Security numbering system to segregate its citizens according to race. At first I thought that this was ridiculous. This message said that African-Americans and other minorities will be identified by the fifth number of their social security number, which will be always an even number while whites will always have an odd fifth number. Being an African-American and having an even fifth number could be just a coincidence but I have contacted at least ten other African-Americans and found that they too have a fifth even number of their Social Security number. I am not saying that this is definitely the case, but I have to admit that to this point it seems to be true. Can you just imagine how employers and real estate people can use this as an undetectable way to steer blacks and other minorities elsewhere when applying for jobs or housing? I hope that this doesn't turn out to be just another internet hoax or urban legend that is why I am asking YOU, the public to check your Social Security numbers in order to prove or disprove this theory....and let me know what you find.

Congratulations to Rocky Anderson

Cindy Sheehan is not the only one that is causing George W(idow-maker) Bush headaches. Kudos must go out to Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson who called for a massive anti-war
demonstration in Utah's largest city while George Bush was in town to promote the war. Mayor
Anderson called for a massive demonstration. He wanted it to be the largest in the city's history. Estimates vary, it may not have been the largest in the city's history but it was certainly large enough to get the world's attention, some estimates go as high as ten thousand people. This act is "amazing" because we are talking about Utah, the home of Orrin Hatch, the reddest of all red states that gave George W(idowmaker) Bush the highest percentage of votes. This "gutsy" move puts the national spotlight on Rocky Anderson, who joins Cindy Sheehan and Paul Hackett as Democrats who have stepped up to the plate. For years I have just not been able to understand why a majority Democratic city like New York City keeps electing Republican mayors like Giuliani and Bloomberg. Well it's nice to see that the opposite happens: Rocky Anderson is a Democratic mayor in the overwhelmingly Republican Utah. This type of action would never have been taken by a DLC democrat because they "support" the war and the few among them that do oppose the war are "afraid" of being labeled "traitors" or being considered
among those who the right love to say "give comfort to the enemy" Rocky Anderson has shown that he has a spine and wants the type of "in your face" activitism the Democratic party must have in order to motivate the "Democratic" wing of the party.

Pat Robertson and Father Jean Juste: a contrast in styles

The lives of Pat Robertson and Father Jean Juste are as different as day is from night, even though both would describe themselves as being men of God. Mr Robertson is the evangelist celebre, millionaire host of the ever popular 700 Club tv show and former presidential candidate. There is a part of me that would really like to describe Mr. Robertson in the style of the Rude Pundit (for those of you who aren't aware the Rude Pundit is a progressive who says exactly what he feels using extensive profanity, When I think of Pat Robertson a part of me would be ecstatic giving him the Rude Pundit description, but I too am a Christian so as a result I will refrain from cursing, but I will attempt to describe what I feel to be a totally despicable excuse for a human being. Mr. Robertson claims to be a man of God. If he is truely a man of God then he would know God's first commandment is
"Thou Shall Not Kill". In front of a national audience Mr. Robertson advocated the assassination of Hugo Chavez Frias, the 5 time elected President of Venezuela apparently because he is "The world's most outspoken critic of George W. Bush" Mr. Robertson doesn't want his parishioners to know that the world is filled with outspoken critics of George W. Bush, in fact I am proud to be among them. Mr. Robertson doesn't realize that Venezuelan oil belongs to ALL Venezuelans. He doesn't realize that all Mr. Chavez has done was redistribute the wealth in his country, which is something the people elected him to do not once, but five times. Mr. Robertson doesn't want his parishioners to know that the United States, or better said the George W. Bush administration played a role in the attempted overthrow of the Chavez government. There is a concerted effort to poison the minds of Americans against Mr. Chavez , Mr. Robertson is at the forefront of this movement. To publicly advocate the killing of another human being just because he is doing the job that his people elected him to do is hyprocrisy, especially coming from a man of God in the United States where we frequently hear the words "liberty" and "freedom". Mr. Robertson just doesn't take into account an earlier time when the United States played policeman of world and overthrew a foreign government (that did nothing to the United States) close to two thousand American troops were killed. The same way that we love our country, Iraqis love their country and Venezuelans love their country. 500,000 Venezuelans took to the street in defense of Chavez. This "shocked" the enemies of Chavez and their US supporters.
It is a proven fact that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It is a proven fact because of the Downing Street memo that George Bush LIED. Mr. Robertson apparently wants another Iraq in Venezuela, 2,000 American lives lost is not enough, it seems as if he wants more. Mr. Robertson should be able to feel the heat that another right wing mouthpiece Rush Limbaugh felt last week, when he received record breaking amounts of hate mail caused by his LIE about Cindy Sheehan. A good deal of this mail was coming from his own listeners. Mr. Robertson does not permit equal time and never exposes his audience to representatives of another point of view, as a result we have an army of uninformed robots who give freely their time and their MONEY to this modern day "Christian" who is betraying the ideals of Christ.
Now let's contrast this opulent lifestyle to that of Father Jean-Juste, whose story cannot be found in the American press. Father Jean-Juste is currently arrested in his native Haiti, charged with murder. The father was attending the funeral of a murdered Haitian journalist when suddenly he was surrounded by well dressed people who shouted that he was the murderer. The justification for Jean-Juste's arrest is that because the journalist's body was found in a poor neighborhood (which is usually associated with the Lavalas party) that Jean-Juste was responsible. The current Haitian dictator was installed by the United States government. Elected President Jean Bertran Aristide (another man of the church) was overthrown and sent out of the country against his will. The same thing that happened in Iraq happened in Haiti, just on a smaller scale. But even in tiny Haiti resistence is growing. As a result of the growing resistence massacres are being carried out by the Tortue government and even with the participation of the United Nations. I wish that Father Jean-Juste and Pat Robertson could change places.

Antiwar Democrats, where are you?

Since the President's approval rating in now in the 30's and Cindy Sheehan becoming a household word there was plenty of room for optimism for true Democrats and progressives. But optimism changes to cautious optimism when one scrutinizes the current political situation in the US today with regard to the war. At this time there is no major Democratic candidate who speaks out against the war. Hillary Clinton, who says she is not a candidate for the presidency in 2008 doesn't criticize the war but criticizes the way that it has been handled. Joe Biden, the only Democrat who has declared himself a candidate is very eager to let us know that he does not see eye to eye with the current party leader Howard Dean. Biden has also shown that he supports the current war effort. Well, most of the country does NOT support this illegal unnecessary war, so why don't we see more Democratic candidates speaking out. The Republicans may be losing favor with the vast majority of the people of this nation but one thing they know that might help them is the existance of the disconnect between the grassroots Democrat and the Democratic brainstrust. Howard Dean has the monumental task of keeping everything together, but the signs of discord are still evident. How many Democrats do we see taking advantage of a photo opportunity with the most popular woman in America?.....not many. On the Democratic side, especially those with strong ties to big business are saying very little about ending this war. I didn't hear John Kerry say that he was against the Iraqi war either. What I did hear was that he too was against the way the war was being run. Well being against the way the war is run is NOT good enough!!!!! What the grassroots Democrat wants to hear from it's candidate for President is that the war in Iraq is going to end and set the date for the ending. It is ironic that I can name Republicans who are doing Chuck Hagel and Ron Paul, yet I am still looking for the Democratic presidential candidate to do the same thing. While the American Bar Association has given John Roberts its unconditional seal of approval the ethically challenged Bush administration continues to conceal documents requested by members of Congress. Most of these members of Congress who are requesting these documents are DEMOCRATS! Yet we don't see any concrete actions against Mr. Robert's nomination, even those papers that the White House does share show that Mr. Roberts vehemently opposes a woman's right to chose, fought tooth and nail to prevent the equal rights amendment and also fervently opposed affirmative action during his years as a lawyer for the Reagan administration. Of course there are Democrats who are opposing the Roberts' nomination but apparently most are willing to accept Mr. Roberts while the politically aware grassroot Democrat is beside himself/herself with anger. The enemy is the Democratic Leadership Counci, which is a cancer on the Democratic party. The time has come to let them know that they are NOT in a position to set policy on the war in Iraq or present and future Supreme Court nominations from the ethically challenged Bush administration. This is NOT the time to extend a hand to the right side of the aisle in Congress as Joe Lieberman says so frequently. This is THE time to clean house on the left side of the aisle. Democrats, DLC or otherwise you can NOT expect to support this war and at the same time get our vote. Someone once characterized the American form of government as a bird with two Republican wings, a true Republican wing and a DLC (Republican Lite) wing. It's up to us the American people to make this characterization a falsehood.

The political landscape has changed

Great news for Gar(see August 16, 2005 post) and all others who have lost faith in the Democratic process. Pensito Review has polled people in all of the 31 red states and found that they have turned blue. Biggest surprises on the list of newly minted Blue states: Ohio, which gave Bush the presidency but where disapproval of Bush is now at 60 percent, and solid red South Carolina, where disapproval of the president is at 51 percent. Also of note is Florida, where the president’s approval rate has slipped to 44 percent, with 53 percent disapproving.
New Mexico
North Carolina*
South Carolina
South Dakota
West Virginia
* Approval/Disapproval tied
Overall, the survey shows the president’s approval at 41 percent. His approval in the individual states ranges from Idaho at 59 percent (higher even than the 57 percent in Texas) to a low of 29 percent in Rhode Island - not good news for Sen. Lincoln Chaffee (R-RI), who’s up for re-election next year.
Bush is above 50% in 7 states . As
if this isn't enough good news for progressive Democrats. Republicans are involved in numerous scandals: Taft in Ohio, Tobin in New Hampshire, Delay in Texas.. and of course there is the outing of Valerie Plame, that not only involves Karl Rove but also the following distinguised personalities......

I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby Condoleezza Rice Stephen HadleyAndrew Card Alberto Gonzales Mary Matalin Ari Fleischer Susan Ralston Israel Hernandez
John Hannah Scott McClellan Dan Bartlett Claire Buchan Catherine Martin Colin Powell Karen Hughes Adam Levine Bob Joseph Vice President Dick Cheney President George W. Bush
I aslo can not leave out Dennis Hastert who has been accused to accepting a large quantity of money from Turkish operatives who wanted him to refute Turkish involvement in the Armenian genocide. Interpreter Sibel Edmonds has been gagged by the government. Could this be the reason?Anything can happen between now and Election Day 2006. There are still some of you out there who fervently believe the last two national presidential elections weren't "fixed" I am convinced that there were and I am also convinced that the Republican hierarchy is convinced that if they got away with it twice they can get away with it three times, but this time they are going to have to be very creative. California has told Diebold they will not use their voting machines and 23 other states have insisted on using voting machines with paper trails. The American public will have to scrutinize both major political parties because if a DLC Democratic is elected we will have a continuance of Bush policies in a softer, gentler fashion. Then of course there is also the worst case scenario for 2008.....suppose the Republican nominee, Cheney, Frist, McCain or even Jeb Bush loses the election, claims fraud and the US has it's first ever coup d'etat. I can just hear many of you saying "Oh, it can't happen here".....but it can. There are already facilities to house large numbers of people against there will. I don't mean to be overly pessemistic but in the seventies tens of thousands of people who supported their "elected" president in Chile were driven into stadiums where they were murdered. They too felt it couldn't happen there.

An Open Letter To Cindy Sheehan

Dear Cindy, The first thing I would like to say is that I wish your mother a quick recovery. I just heard on the radio that she suffered a stroke. It should be a comfort to you to know that there were hundreds, no thousands of vigils all across the country in recognition of your bravery. You are the David that is defeating the Goliath(King George The W). Right wing pundits from Billy O'Reilly to Michelle Malkin are doing their best to smear you but they are not connecting with the majority of the American people. I had the good fortune to be at the vigil in Highland Park, New Jersey where there could have been close to a thousand people. At the busy intersection between River Rd. and Raritan Avenue there were so many cars that were honking in support of your efforts to get this ethically challenged president to give us a valid reason for the loss of 1,853 American lives due to an illegal and unjust war. News reports from reliable sources confirm that the country is with you, in fact Pensito Review reports that the majority of the so called red states have turned blue. May you continue to fight the good fight. No lie can live forever. God be with you, Peace, Claude Chaney

My Response To Gar's Comment

I know the frustration that you and other true Democrats feel when you see members of our party continue to vote with the Republicans. It is more than likely that these DINOS(Democrats in name only) are affiliated with the Democratic Leadership Council, that very ineffective group that has played a role in Democrats losing national and state-wide elections. But don't be discouraged because there are signs of hope. First of all the one thing that all true Democrats wherever they are located must do is send a clear message that we are going to hold them accountable and that we will actively work to replace them with real Democrats. In the weeks that come this site is going to publish the names of straying Democrats and how they voted against Democratic ideals and sold out in one way or another to the Republicans. This has to be made an issue before the next state-wide elections. It's a good thing that you are writing to your elected officials and letting them know you don't like what they are doing......especially if they call themselves Democrats. Don't stop writing them. I am doing the same thing (but fortunately in my state, New Jersey we have two real Democrat Senators) but we too have a few other elected officials that quietly support the Bush madness. I am very angry about the tepid response Democrats are giving to the Roberts Supreme Court nomination. The ethically challenged Bush administration has very good reasons for withholding information about Roberts from Congress, but there are other positive things happening ......1) Cindy Sheehan has won the hearts of the vast majority of Americans and whatever O'Reilly, Malkin or Limbaugh have said against her just isn't connecting with the American public. Yesterday in Crawford, Texas a cowardly mob destroyed the crosses and American flags that were set up as a memorial for our fallen soldiers. Within a few hours all of thoses crosses and flags were put right back up again, no doubt angering the goons who knocked them down 2) The Republican party is morally corrupt. Republican Chairman Ken Mehlman unconditionally continues to the support the huge number of Republicans with ethics problems: DeLay, Rove, Noe, Hastert, Blackwell, Cheney and even the selected president himself George W. Bush 3) The near victory of Democrat marine Paul Hackett has stunned Ohio Republicans. This young man will definitely be heard from again 4) The Democratic Party is slowing going through a metamorphosis in which leadership is going to come from the bottom up rather than vice versa. has changed the rules. Numerous small contributions are proving to be more effective than huge contributions given by a few. Of course removing the deeply entrenched Republic party is no easy task and it will take time, but the important thing is that it IS happening: 60% of Americans are against the Iraq war and want the troops to come home. George W(idow maker) Bush's approval rating is taking a nose-dive at below 40% so don't despair.

Gar's comment

Once again Gar had commentary for one of my recent posts ....and once again I would like to share it with everyone. Gar said "I've read some of your posts and I'm with you. The big question - as always is - just what are we going to do about it. I live in Arkansas. Even though we have a Republican governor, we have Democratic Senators and Democratic members in the House but they might as well be Republicans. They voted for CAFTA. They voted for the Energy Bill. They voted for the Bankruptcy Bill. They voted for the Transportation Bill.I am constantly writing letters, making phone calls and writing editors of local newspapers. Frankly, I'm getting discouraged. If there were a strong third party, I would be in it. The elected Democrats from my state don't have a clue what being a Democrat is all about. It's no wonder we can't win national elections. Why should people vote for second-rate Republicans (Democrats) when they can vote for the real deal. At least, with Republicans, you know what you’re getting; a greedy, self-righteous, religious bigot who is against women’s and worker’s rights and for big oil and pharmacy companies. Who the hell knows what you'll get if you elect a Democrat?

It's time to bring back "The Fairness Doctrine"

On November 14, 2004 the Virginia Pilot fired Michelle Malkin. The public editor Marvin Lake said "readers often took issue with her [Malkin's] seemingly mean-spirited rantings and suggested that she be dropped." Michelle Malkin is just another in a series of right-wing pundits that saturate newsprint and television, like Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Sean
Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh. All of these acid-tongued right wingers are famous for not letting anyone with a opposite point of view get a word in edgewise or in the case of Limbaugh, not letting anyone on the show who has a different point of view, yet he will put words into other people’s mouths. It was during the Reagan era that the Fairness doctrine was totally eliminated. Once upon a time in America there was a law that stated that equal time would be given to two
parties debating any major issue, it was called the Fairness Doctrine. When Ronald Reagan destroyed this law we began to see the Limbaughs, Hannities, O’Reillys and Michelle Malkin who teamed up with Bill O’Reilly to bash Cindy Sheehan, a mother who lost her son
in Iraq and wants the president to explain what the “noble” cause was that her son died for. Malkin and O’Reilly go on and on about how what Sheehan is doing (camping out near President’s home in Crawford until he tells her what that noble cause is). These two went as far as to say that there are those out there who believe what Cindy Sheehan did is
treasonous, yet they have the gall to say that they respect her grief and that they were not attacking Sheehan. It is rare that you find a columnist who is critical of a writer on his or her paper, but this is the case with Bronwyn Lance Chester, another columnist of the Virginia Pilot who had this to say about Michelle Malkin I think [Malkin] habitually mistakes shrill for thought-provoking and substitutes screaming for discussion. She's an Asian Ann Coulter. I also think that, like Coulter, she says outrageous things just to get TV appearances and book deals. She's the worst of what's wrong with punditry today. She adds absolutely nothing to genuine political discourse.
· Here are just a few examples of the lies promoted by Michelle Malkin that caught the attention of Media “Malkin selectively quoted a New York Times editorial board member to portray a distorted image of the mainstream media's treatment of minority conservative politicians.
· Malkin followed the right-wing magazine NewsMax in falsely accusing the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) of registering a terrorist to vote in Ohio.
· Malkin referred to Women for Kerry (a "community" within Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign) as "an embarrassment to a nation at war." All cable networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX have a talking head that to one degree or another fits this genre….and these people go unchallenged. At least on CNN you will occasionally see a Paul Begala or James Carville articulately and enthusiastically challenging right wing ideology, but on all the other
networks the viewer gets a study diet of conservative philosophy only. This is the reason Bush was elected. This is the reason why we find ourselves in a war that is based on a proven lie. This is why we have a president who has committed impeachable offenses but cannot be
impeached because all major branches of government are controlled by people from his party. Under today’s conditions you will never see a Bill O’Reilly have a discussion with Noam Chomsky, or Michelle Malkin discuss an issue with Maxine Waters or a debate between Rush
Limbaugh and Michael Moore. Anytime we have anything coming remotely close to this you are almost guaranteed to have the right wing Pundit stand up and scream “THAT’S RIDICULOUS” which will lead to a tantrum and an exit. It is for these reasons that I applaud The Virginia Pilot for dismissing Michelle Malkin and I ask the editors and readers of the following newspapers to do the same: The Miami Herald, The Kansas City Star, Akron Beacon Journal (Ohio), USA Today, Philadelphia Daily News, The Union Leader (Manchester, New Hampshire), The Dallas Morning News, Desert Dispatch (Barstow, California), The Washington Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Houston Chronicle, The Modesto Bee, The Detroit News, The Rocky Mountain News, The Boston Herald, The Hartford Courant, The State Journal-Register (Springfield, Illinois), The Bellingham Herald (MA), The Asheville Citizen Times, The Herald-Dispatch (Huntington, West Virginia), The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, California), The Star-Gazette (Elmira, New York), The Times (Shreveport, Louisiana), the El Paso Times, the Great Falls Tribune (Montana), The Lowell Sun (Massachusetts), the Lexington Herald-Leader (Kentucky), The Home News Tribune (East Brunswick, New Jersey), The Times Herald (Port Huron, Michigan), The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Florida Today (Melbourne, Florida), The Advocate (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (New York). The time has come to bring back the Fairness doctrine. A national movement is already taking shape. This is in no way a campaign to silence conservative thought, but the American people need to hear both sides of an issue so that they can decide for themselves and not become the robots and dittos that the conservative media have created.

9/11: There are STILL more questions than answers

No other US city has more of a right to question the events of 9/11 than New York City. The mainstream media has mentioned very little about those who seriously question the events of 9/11. The same nagging questions are being asked by more and more New Yorkers every day: 1) Steel takes an incredibly long time to burn, yet the twin towers went down incredibly fast 2) People reported hearing explosions just prior to the plane hitting one of the towers 3) Why were former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon warned not to come to New York on September 11. 2000? 4)Why did building #7 go down? There was no plane that hit it. 5)Why were the two planes permitted to fly in prohibited airspace at prohibited low levels? When I mention these occurences to my conservative friends the first thing that they say is: Oh that's RIDICULOUS and you're a conspiracy theorist. This is said in the same manner that you would see Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly just get totally frustrated when in the presence of a guest who is getting his or her point of view across and they just don't have the words with which to fight back. As I have mentioned at least five times in previous posts on this site....there is such a thing as the Project For A New American Century where it is stated that the 'new' order would need a catastrophic event to rally the people around the president, something like Pearl Harbor. George W Bush enjoyed his highest poll ratings just after 9/11. It is hard to believe the neocons would sacrifice the lives of 3,000 Americans just to move their agenda of world wide domination forward. The questions that I have thousands, tens of thousands, possible hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have but you don't see anything about them in the media. Yes of course, I could be fact I hope that I am but those nagging questions still persist. I have also noticed that almost every ultra conservative from Tom Delay to Rick Santorum continues to compare Democrat and progressive actions to those of Nazis. Is that because the memories of World War II are still fresh in the minds of our most elderly senior citizens and they have been passed on from one generation to the other to such an extent that Nazis have become the epitome of "evil", well George W. Bush's grandfather Prescott Bush was a Nazi sympathizer. The neocons speak of the endless war. Endless war means BIG profits for those in the weapons field and of course the oil companies. Is this a conspiracy? . . .it could be. The more I see questions about 9/11 deliberately avoided by this administration and the media the more I believe that it is.

Alleged Republican Dirty Tricks in New Hampshire too.

The voting irregularities in Florida and Ohio are known to all, even the mainstream media has mentioned the accusations from time to time, yet all Republicans and many Democrats are still unwilling to admit both the 2000 and 2004 elections were stolen. More accusations are emerging, the Associated Press focuses on New Hampshire "A telephone firm was paid to make repeated hang-up phone calls to overwhelm the phone banks in New Hampshire and prevent them from getting Democratic voters to the polls on Election Day 2002, prosecutors allege. Republican John Sununu won a close race that day to be New Hampshire's newest senator." Charges were filed against the RNC in December of 2004 and since that time the Republican Party has paid more than $722,000 to a team of lawyers from the Washington D.C firm Williams and Connerly. The focus is on James Tobin, the 2004 Bush Campaign chairman for New England who is pleading innocent. Mr. Tobin is accused of conspiring to keep Democrats from voting in New Hampshire. I find it amazing that an event of this magnitude is not found on the pages of major newspapers and on television screens. Like in all previous cases Republican chaiman Ken Mehlman denies the slightest trace of impropriety, the former White House political director, reiterated a "zero-tolerance policy" for any GOP official caught trying to block legitimate votes."
"The position of the Republican National Committee is simple: We will not tolerate fraud; we will not tolerate intimidation; we will not tolerate suppression. No employee, associate or any person representing the Republican Party who engages in these kinds of acts will remain in that position," Mehlman wrote Monday to a group that studied voter suppression tactics. Accusations of foul play among Republicans are so numerous it is becoming difficult to keep track of all of them: 1) Karl Rove accused of leaking the name of a C.I.A. agent as vengeance for her husband telling the truth about the attempted sale of yellowcake uranium to Saddam Heussein operatives. 2) VP Richard Cheney accused of setting the nations energy policy behind closed doors with oil and coal industry execs, excluding environmental groups 3) Tom Delay accused of extortion and gerrymandering in Texas, 4) Ohio Governor Noe can't justify the disappearance of tens of thousands of dollars in the so-called "coin gate" scandal 5) J. Kenneth Blackwell, an African-American is accused of disenfranchising fellow African-Americans in his state of Ohio from voting. 5) Dennis Hastert is accused of accepting tens of thousands from Turkish operatives in exchange for his stating that Turks didn't commit genocide against Armenians. Sibel Edmonds the one person who might be able to confirm or deny this accusation has been given a gag order as well as losing her job. 6) Jack Abramoff is indicted of bank fraud and is accussing of swindling huges sums of money from a Native American tribe and now John Tobin is accused of preventing Democrats from voting in New Hampshire. These events would provoke cries of outrage from Republicans over generations past. Even during the Nixon administration there were quite a few Republicans who came forward and put the interests of the people ahead of those of the party. Where are the Republicans of strong moral fiber? The irony of this is that there are those across the country who say that they voted for the Republican candidates because of their high moral standards........and those people have got to be either kidding or profoundly stupid. These days the Grand Old Party has taken the nation back to the days of John D. Rockefeller when huge corporations ruled in the sole interest of making profits with no regard for the people. When will Americans wake up? ....maybe they are starting to now even though it may be too late: Dade County of Florida is now making it law that for all future elections there will be a paper trail. The state of California has given Diebold( the company that made all those traceless voting machines) the boot, forever. 23 states have insisted on voting machines WITH paper trails. Hope springs eternal.

Support for Cindy Sheehan grows, and grows and grows.

The ethically challenged leader of the most ethically challenged administration in the history of the United States, George W(idow-maker). Bush has an uncanny habit of saying things that come back to embarrass him and the country. We all remember "Bring 'Em On" or "Mission Accomplished" or "Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on me" Well, he's done it again. While speaking to a group of mothers who have lost their children in Iraq he made another one of those statements, not realizing that one of those mothers was listening to him carefully when he said “Our men and women who’ve lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and in this war on terror have died in a noble cause and a selfless cause.” So Cindy Sheehan, that one mother who listened carefully now wants an explanation from Mr. Bush. She wants to know what was that "noble" cause. She went to Crawford, Texas, where she was restricted to a ditch. Two representatives from the White House politely told Ms. Sheehan that they would address her issues, but just as politely she told them that she wanted to speak to the President only. As the Bush camp along with it's long time ally Clear Channel prepare for a massive rally around the flag......and especially the war to commemorate 9/11 which will be headlined by Clint Black. Cindy Sheehan will not go away. She plans to follow him back to Washington if she gets no response in Crawford. The ethically challenged selected President apparently expected Ms. Sheehan to just go away after a while. Not only has she ruined his record breaking vacation, she has attracted a lot of attention, even from the mainstream media( which rarely says anything that doesn't meet the president's approval)is watching and reporting. For more information about Cindy Sheehan's cause visit the following sites Gold Star Families for Peace, MilitaryFamiliesSpeakOut, ,Veterans For Peace,, CodePink,, Vietnam Veterans Against War (Iraq Veterans Against the War),

Ibrahim Ferrer 1927-2005

Ibrahim Ferrer, internationally known singer and composer has passed away at the age of 78. Mr Ferrer had been a first rate entertainer for many years in his native Cuba but he was able to reach a world-wide audience rather late in life when Ry Cooder produced an album and later a film "Buena Vista Social Club" which showcased the talents of veteran Cuban performers. These musicians have performed all over the world to large appreciative audiences. Although they performed in parts of the United States they were prohibited from performing in the Miami area where dates were cancelled due to the fact that they refused to defect from Cuba.

Food For Thought,,,,,,,,,,,

The Cuban Five get a new trial

The five Cubans arrested for espionage in Miami have earned a new trial. The District Court 11 threw out the case against the five because it determined that there was no way they could get a fair trial in Miami because of overwhelming bias against the Castro regime in Cuba. The judges decision was a surprise when one looks at the current political situation in the United States today. Three propective jurors were removed from the jury pool because they said that they had no opinion one way or the other about Fidel Castro. These five men infiltrated anti-Castro organizations that were engaged in terrorist actions that killed innocent Cuban people as well as tourists in an attempt to dethrone Fidel Castro. THESE FIVE MEN CAME TO THE UNITED STATES FIRST WITH THE INFORMATION THEY FOUND. As a result they were arrested and have been jailed almost three years just waiting for a trial. At the same time the United States refused to return Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela where he is accused of bombing a Cuban commerical aircraft. This case has received very little coverage in the mainstream media. Having a new trial doesn't necessarily mean that the five men will be given their freedom because the trial could be moved to another ultra conservative part of the country where people would still be likely to have a conservative bias. Defense Attorney Leonard Wineglass is to be praised for his tireless effort help these men return to their country and their families.

The only hero created by Bush's Iraq War lie - The mother of a dead soldier by August Keso

The NYT did a recent piece wondering where all the hero's of the Iraq war are or perhaps, better said aren't? I won't go into detail about the historically propagandist NYT (after the bombs fell in Japan, they wilfully mislead the American public concerning the effects of radiation sickness - in effect saying no such thing existed). If you want more on the NYT piece and a truly great analysis read PM Carpenter's article here.Truly, nothing more needs to be said about the NYT and especially their absurd article. PM put that idiocy to bed with his analysis of their flawed analysis. As for heroes well, there is one very courageous hero emerging out of the quagmire that is Bush's war constructed completely on a pack of lies. This hero however, isn't fighting in Iraq and for all I know has never even flown over, let alone been to Iraq. In a nation where corporate news does all it can to pass along the Bushevik lies piled one atop the other, and does even more to spin the Emperor's arrogance into something akin to conviction or even courage, the one true hero of the Iraq War, stands solitary and conspicuous like a lone star in a murky black sky.Stacked against this hero is the entire weight of an incredibly corrupt, lying and criminal United States Government, a mountain of wealthy corporate -- think Halliburton, Exxon and Shell -- supporters and a propagandized and extremist Right-Wing media who as I write have their pack of hungry lying wolves poised to dissect every word, thought and breath of the lone Iraq War hero. Yet, the hero stands defiant in the eye of the perfect political storm that swirls around her every moment. How bad are things for our one true hero? Well, Karl Rove and George "W"idow-Maker Bush have all ready started spinning lies about not only her words, but her emotional state at the time the words were uttered. As if that weren't bad enough, Rove and "W"idow-Maker are now, threatening to have the hero tossed in prison for of all the absurd things, being a threat to national Security. Just who is this one true hero that has put so much fear into the hearts of a vast Right-Wing lying, torturing, mafia like Bush administration? Who is it that threatens their all powerful, omnipotent and God-like powers, so much that they are considering throwing her in jail? She is a mother. One, little, itty-bitty mother of one dead Iraq War soldier and because she dares not goose-step along with the Bushevik lies...because she attempts to speak truth to power this mother -- Cindy Sheehan -- not only stands a chance of being tossed into prison, but has become the only real hero produced by the Iraq War.

Another Republican Victory: Another Democratic Sellout

The recent flurry of Republican legislative victories have been aided by an unlikely source........Democrats. Keep in mind that this Congress has an even lower approval rating than the president. Many of these victories which betray Democratic ideals would not have become law without the help of so called Democrats. I cannot condemn Senator Nelson of Nebraska because he is a man who shouldn't have been elected because he is an aberration from a very red state so he has to vote with Republicans for his very existence. The rest of the Democrats have no excuse. I congratulate the two senators from my state, Frank Lautenberg and Jon Corzine who have a pretty good record of voting like "true" Democrats. There are many Democrats in the Senate and the House who say one thing when they are in front of their constituents but vote in a completely different manner when in Congress. The most recent example is with those Democrats who supported the recently passed Energy bill. This bill is going to give more of our tax dollars to the already properous oil and energy corporations who are reporting record profits. Under Bush the rich get richer and some Democrats help them. I, along with many other progressive Democrats will be watching the vote. If you are an elected official who sells out your Democratic contituency you will be held accountable. Here is a listing of Democrats who betrayed Democratic principles and voted for the energy bill. Akaka D-Hi, Baucus D-Mt, Bayh D-In, Cantwell D-Wa, Conrad D-ND, Dorgan D-ND, Dubin D-Il, Harkin D-IA, Inouye D-Hi, Kohl D-Wi, Johnson D-SD, Landrieu D-La,Levin D-MI, Lincoln D-AR, Mikulski D-MD, Nelson D-Ne, Mikulski D-MD, Obama D-Il, Rockefeller D-WV, Stabenow D-Mi. Thirty Democrats expressed the will of the people who sent them to Congress, twenty SOLD OUT.

John Johnson 1918-2005

John Johnson, legendary pioneer African-American publisher has passed away at the age of 87. Mr. Johnson fulfilled an urgent need for blacks to read positive stories and see positive images of themselves during the years prior to the end of the second world war. Mr. Johnson turned a $500 investment into 1.9 milion yearly income grossing enterprise called Ebony magazine. Before Ebony most white owned newspapers and magazines portrayed blacks as either charlatans of comic relief or dangerous violent individuals. Mr. Johnson was able to convince the corporate world at the time that money could be made advertising their products in black media. One of the first businesses to get on board was Zenith televison. Today Ebony and Jet magazines benefit from a world wide profitable distribution, but that was not always the case. In the initial stages of his endeavor Mr. Johnson experienced condemnation and even ridicule for even attempting such a project. Even such well meaning friends like civil rights leader Roy Wilkens did their best to discourage the Arkansas native from starting a black focused magazine. Or course, Wilkens later confided to Johnson that he was wrong. John Johnson has earned a bright spot in American history and his name will be remembered and passed on to future generations who will acknowledge and praise his ground breaking achievement in magazine publishing.

There is a new website which is seriously devoted to the criminal Prosecution of Robert Novak, who allegedly leaked the name of Valerie Plame, a CIA agent in at least two of his columns for the Chicago Sun-Times. This is not the first time that Mr.Novak has been implicated in a leak. He is very well connected to neocon chickenhawkRichard Perle, who is a member of the board of directors of Hollinger International, the company that owns the Chicago Sun-Times. The National Journal reported in 1979Evans and Novak were among the three chief recipients of classified leaks from Perle. Novak ignored specific CIA request to protect Plame's identity. "Novak readily admits that that when he called the CIA to inquire about Plame, he was asked not to identify her because 'exposure of her name might cause "difficulties" if she travels abroad.' He then went out of his way to do it. Now he says 'the CIA never warned me that the disclosure of Wilson's wife working at the agency would endanger her or anybody else.' But the fact remains that he was asked not to name her - and he did." ["NOVAK TURNED A LEAK INTO A MUGGING," Philadelphia Daily News, October 9, 2003] Republican responses to Novak’s alleged crime have run the gamut: “He didn’t do it” “He did it unintentionally” “He didn’t mention Valerie Plame by name” “He thought
that she was just a low level agency liaison” This site asks the public to send a letter to
the Chicago Sun-Times requesting the dismissal of Mr. Novak. I am in total agreement
with this campaign. If Judith Miller has to go to jail, why not Robert Novak? Recently Mr. Novak was involved in a heated discussion with Democratic advisor James Carville.
Suddenly Novak stormed of the set. This time of behavior is unprecented and very suspicious. Did Robert Novak know that someone was definitely going to mention
Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife Valerie Plame? The Chicago Sun-Times, Hollinger International, The Republican Party and CNN all need to know that the people of the United States consider treason a serious crime and those who has access to the Highest echelon of government are NOT immune from prosecution…..even Robert Novak.

Why does the so-called "liberal media" have so little to say about the Downing Street Memo?

Now is the time for the public to put pressure on the media for NOT covering the recent developments in the Downing Street Memo case. There have been massive overflow demonstrations all across the country by people who want to know if George W. Bush committed impeachable offences in a conversation with the British Prime Minister Tony Blair when Bush allegedly said intelligence has to be "fixed" in order the get widespread support for war in Iraq. Rep. Barbara Lee has introduced H.R 375 which demands clarification from the White House on this issue. David Swanson of asked the question that is on so many people's minds ""Why is it so hard to get a Democrat from a solidly Democratic district to introduce articles of impeachment? What are they waiting for?"
It's a hell of a question. They know that a Zogby poll in the end of June – the ONLY poll done on impeachment of Bush – found that 42 percent of Americans (meaning a strong majority of Democrats) favor impeachment if the President lied about the reasons for war. They know that 52 percent believe he did in fact so lie, according to ABC/Washington Post.
What are they waiting for? The Backbone Campaign also encourages YOU to take action NOW!

Paul Hackett: When is a loss NOT a loss?

Paul Hackett defied the odds and almost became an Ohio congressman. Had he won it would have been the biggest upset since Truman beat Dewey. This Ohio district didn't have a Democrat congressperson for decades. Jean Schmidt narrowly won 52% to 48%, were it not for the heavy turnout in Schmidt's native county Hackett would have won. This loss is really not a loss because now the Republicans are going to have to spend money. Howard Dean has always been an advocate of taking the fight to Republican districts without ceding anything. The Nation magazine had this to say before the election "John Aravosis over at AMERICABlog points out that NBC's First Read thinks that even if Jean Schmidt wins in Ohio, Republicans lost.
Political analysts doubt that Hackett can pull off the upset in this district in a special election, when only diehard voters tend to participate. Nevertheless, Stuart Rothenberg of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report argues that this race is a no-win situation for the Republicans -- if Schmidt wins, then she was always supposed to win, but if Hackett comes close, or even wins, then it becomes a significant victory for the Democrats. "Republicans really get nothing out of it," he says.
Amy Walter, who monitors House races for the Cook Political Report, says that if Hackett comes close, that will be another sign that the Ohio GOP is in disarray. "The real story is the collateral damage that Taft and 'Coingate' may have on the party in the state." Indeed, Walter says it's no coincidence that the ad being run by the Democratic House campaign committee tries to link Schmidt to GOP Gov. Bob Taft." Paul Hackett narrowly missed becoming the first congressperson who serve admirably in the armed services and Congress. Democrats everywhere have become energized. Of course I have to say that I hope that this election was a fair one because not only have Republican operatives been accused of foul play in the two previous national elections but the recent defeat of Max Clelland in the Georgia senatorial race has also come under scrutiny when exit polls clearly showed he was the winner. Paul Hackett was very confrontational and energetic when it came to confronting Republicans. He called George W. Bush and SOB. I am not surprised that we haven't been inundated with Republican outcries since Bush showed his middle finger to reporters and Vice President Cheney told Senator Leahy "F_ck You" and later said he felt good about it. Paul Hackett is a US marine, not a chickenhawk. He has had not one, but two terms of duty. Who else would be better to talk about the war in Iraq? This young man is still in his twenties, so he will be heard from again. He represents the element in the Democratic party that is activist, not the enabling, spineless, Republican-Lite DLC. In this case a loss is not a loss when it sets the groundwork for the future. Paul Hackett is a shining star in the Democratic party.

Mission Statement:
Our democracy is only as strong as the participation of the people. Do your representatives only hear from you once every two or four years, assuming you vote at all? There are members of Congress who publicly bemoan the fact that they don't hear from more of their constituents more often. Our leaders are our generals in the political arena, but we are their troops. They can't do battle for us against opposing interests without being able to demonstrate our ongoing support. The People's Email Network is constructed to facilitate communication with our elected officials. By your participation you can establish that you are a voter who will call your government to account at each successive election. Your views do count. They will be heard. And most importantly, when you cast your votes in the section above, be sure to use the ground-breaking input functions of our website to also submit the email addresses of everyone you know. In this way we can together mobilize the entire country to speak in the loudest possible voice.ACTION FORM: SHOULD THE SENATE CONFIRM MORE RIGHT WING JUDGES TO THE SUPREME COURT?
Why don't you tell Congress where you stand? Here, we'll make it easy for you. All you have to do is fill in one form now and with one click we will send your personal message to both of your senators. We'll even look them up based on your address and tell you who they are. Just a few simple words from you mean more than any form letter can. Please read the question carefully to make sure your vote matches your comments. If you think the Senate should accept the president's nomination of a conservative or extremist nominee for the Supreme Court, then vote "Yes", A vote of "Yes" means you think retiring justices should replaced with nominees who are more right wing.Otherwise if you believe we should not accept any candidate who isn't at least a moderate centrist, then vote "No". A vote of "No" means you demand that any new appointees should represent the broad majority of the American people.Even if you don't think your particular representatives would agree with your position it is important for them to hear from you.

More reasons to vote for Pennacchio if you're from Pennsylvania

If you can't understand the logic on Rick Santorum you are not alone. Here is a television interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos which will give you incite as to why this third ranking senator in terms of influence is considered by many to be a headcase. Why has he been called Senator Rick "Man on dog? Santorum?George Stephanopoulos Interviews Sen. Rick Santorum, 7/31/05..................................
STEPHANOPOULOS: Let's talk about something else in the book, radical feminists. A second quote from the book, you say, Respect for stay-at-home mothers has been poisoned by a toxic combination of the village elders? war on the traditional family and radical feminism's mysogynistic crusade to make working outside the home the only marker of social value and self-respect.
Let's get specific here. Name one or two of these radical feminists who are on this crusade.
SANTORUM: Well, I mean, you know, you have to you go back to, what's her name, well, Gloria Steinem, but I'm trying to remember. I can't remember the woman's name. It's terrible. Anyway?
STEPHANOPOULOS: But it's kind of an important point. Because you paint this broad brush: radical feminists, village elders. Name one.
SANTORUM: There's lots of .... no, there's lot's of .... well, Gloria Steinem. There's one. I mean, there's lots of writings out there?
STEPHANOPOULOS: She's been on a crusade against stay-at-home moms?
SANTORUM: There's lots of writings out there, and there is an opinion by the elite in this country across academia, across the media, that stay-at-home motherhood is not adequately affirmed and respected by our society.
SANTORUM: And if you don't believe that, get a panel of stay-at- home moms here on your show, and you ask them whether they feel affirmed by society, whether they feel affirmed by the culture.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Listen, I can go home. My wife Wendy both works and stays at home at various times. And sometimes, when she?s not working, you know, she gets upset, but it?s not some message that's being driven by?
SANTORUM: Isn't it?
STEPHANOPOULOS: specific people.
SANTORUM: Isn't it a message for us? I mean, where does this come from? Does this come from the ether?
STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, I'm asking you. Where are these radical feminists?
SANTORUM: It comes from an elite culture, dictated, again, from academia, dictated, again, from the Hollywood culture and the news media, that says, the only thing that's affirming, the only thing that really counts is what you do at work.
And that goes for men and women. And it's wrong. It's wrong to tell that to fathers. It's wrong to tell that to mothers. And we need to value mothers and fathers spending time with their children much more than we do in America.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Hillary Clinton wrote much the same in her book, It Takes a Village. Do you believe she's a radical feminist?
SANTORUM: Yes, I do. I mean, read her work and what she's done on children's rights. I mean, that's radical. I mean, you're talking about giving children the same rights equal to adults. I mean, that is not a nurturing atmosphere of mothers and fathers taking responsibility for shaping the moral vision of their children. She doesn't agree with that, at least if you look at her earlier writings.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Have you talked to her about your book?
SANTORUM: We've had conversations in passing about it.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Tell us about them.
SANTORUM: Oh, just, you know, pass in the hallway, you know, she made a comment to me about that it takes a village, and I responded, no, it really does take a family.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So no serious debate?
SANTORUM: No serious debate. I'd love to have a serious debate.
STEPHANOPOULOS: You may have drawn her out now, calling her a radical feminist.
SANTORUM: I'd love to have a serious debate. If she'd like to have a serious debate about her view of how society should be ordered and structured. I believe her view is one that says government and top-down. I believe my view is the view that's held by most Americans, which means we need strong families and strong communities, and we don't need government really dissembling those institutions, which I think her view of the world does.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Let's move on to another controversy you stirred up, the question of the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church. You made a statement in July 2002 which has drawn a lot of fire.
You said, in a publication called Catholic On-Line, When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While there's no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm.
You've reaffirmed that just a couple of weeks ago. Ted Kennedy, John Kerry say you have to apologize. Mitt Romney, Republican governor, says basically you don't know what you're talking about. Do you still stand by that statement?
SANTORUM: Look, the statement I made was that the culture influences people's behavior. I don't think anyone?
STEPHANOPOULOS: Isn't that what conservatives used to say about liberals, when they used to say they were trying to excuse criminals?
SANTORUM: I think what I'm saying is that the culture of liberal sexual freedom and the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s had a profound impact on everybody and their sexual mores. It had a profound impact on the church.
STEPHANOPOULOS: But you singled out Boston.
SANTORUM: I singled out Boston in 2002. In July of 2002, that was the epicenter. We did not know?
STEPHANOPOULOS: That is simply not true. I went back and looked at all of these clips. We had stories in 1994, going back all the way to 1984 in Louisiana, in just about every archdiocese in the country.
I just don't understand why you stick by this, because we now know it was widespread. It was in every city in the country.
SANTORUM: Well, at the time, we did not know it was in every city of the country.
STEPHANOPOULOS: We knew a lot of that.
SANTORUM: It was ? look at the press reports. It was the epicenter.
STEPHANOPOULOS: I have them right here.
SANTORUM: I think it's taking it out of context.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Los Angeles Times, January 29, 1994, it cites instances of abuse in Santa Fe and Chicago, as well as Lafayette, Louisiana, and Camden, New Jersey. 1994.
SANTORUM: I understand that it was in other places. All I'm talking about, at the time, what everyone was focused on at the time was Boston.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So you stand by it?
SANTORUM: Look, I will admit that using Boston at the time was appropriate. Now, I would not say it would be appropriate. I would say that Boston right now would we'd say a whole lot of other cities in the country and a whole lot of problems. But if you read the article, that was one of about four or five things that I said.
STEPHANOPOULOS: I did read it.
SANTORUM: and I talked about the problems within the church. I wrote the article in 2002. Ted Kennedy and John Kennedy wrote no articles in 2002 criticizing this church. I went out and talked to bishops. I went out and talked to cardinals. I was very concerned. I was offended and hurt by a church that betrayed me by not doing what they should have done, and I was angered by that, and I spoke out about it, and I spoke loudly about it.
The senators from Massachusetts did nothing. They spoke nothing. They sat by and let this happen.STEPHANOPOULOS: So you're standing your ground?"........Now, who in their right mind would consider Hilary Clinton a radical feminist? .......more than likely an extremist conservative. One of the basic rules of debate is that you have to find supportive examples that back up your point of view, Santorium failed to do this. When Stephanopoulos ask him to give examples of radical feminists he couldn't do it immediately and when he finally did he chose an icon (Gloria Steinham) who came to prominence decades ago. Even more embarrassing was his condemning Boston for being the epicenter of degenerate behavior of priests, while completely ignoring the numerous cases of this phenomena around the country, around the world and specifically in Santorum's home state of Pennsylvania. Pamela Leavy wrote this observations on this topic.

"Rick Santorum claimed yesterday on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” that in July 2002, when he wrote the article that has recently resurfaced, calling Boston the “liberal” seat of church abuse, he did not know that there were similar cases in PA. In my earlier post on this today, I noted that George Stephanopoulos called him on that statement.
Since my earlier post on this, I have received numerous newspaper articles from an anonymous source, dating back to March 2002 that all make reference to church abuse cases in PA. The most interesting article was from July 12, 2002 - Capitol Hill Pastor Faces Child Sex Case.
The pastor of a historic Capitol Hill parish that serves many Roman Catholic members of Congress was placed on leave yesterday after a Washington area man accused him of sexual abuse in the early 1970s, the second such allegation against the priest.
The last paragraph of the article notes that among the church’s parishioners included “Sens. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) and Rick Santorum (R-Pa.).”
It’s absolutely despicable that Rick Santorum is playing politics with with the victims of these cases. If this is some sort of marketing ploy to sell his new book to conservatives it’s a sick joke aimed towards those who have suffered. No man with any sense of moral dignity, would continue pushing this issue as Santorum has.
It’s time for Rick Santorum to step up to the plate and do the right thing, as it is he who dredged up these painful memories and put them back in the limelight. Instead of working to help heal the victims of church abuse Santorum has perpetuated the ugliest of rumors and lies in the name of politics and marketing.
On July 21st, Santorum met with the leaders of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), and made promises “to find out why the U.S. Justice Department has taken no action to investigate the Catholic Church’s secret transport of pedophile priests across state lines and international boundaries via church operated “treatment” and “retreat” facilities. ”
SNAP issued a press release today regarding Santorum’s latest outburst yesterday and queried as to when they could expect a response from Santorum. Read the press release here.
A March 3, 2002, NY Times article shows that the Vatican was aware of the full scope of the abuse problem. Yet, Rick Santorum, a self purported good Catholic claimed not to have know of any where in the country outside of MA that was stricken by the issue. Sorry, but such denial doesn’t wash.
A March 5th, NY Times article states that “several dioceses, including New Hampshire’s and Philadelphia’s, immediately suspended any priests ever accused of abusing children.”
It’s time for Rick Santorum to stop trying to score cheap political points and sell his book on the back of children who have been victims of sexual abuse. Such pandering is the lowest of low.

Pennsylvanians I ask you is this the type of man you want to continue to represent you in the Senate?......someone who doesn't do research before making blanket statements that cannot be supported with hard evidence. You have a choice, Santorum, Casey(a Democrat who fervently opposes a woman's right to choose) or Chuck Pennacchio, who opposes the Iraq war, supports a woman's right to choose and doesn't open his mouth without doing the proper research. The choice is yours.

GO UP MOSES by Roberta Flack, Joel Dorn and Jesse Jackson

Go up Moses, you've been down too long, Go up Moses, better free us all. Go up Moses, you've been down too long, Go up Moses, better free us alll. Blind man sees that things are wrong. Deaf man hears some funny changes. Boss man hears the people's song, coaxes lies and rearranges Ain't no love and ain't no hate. Only dollars got the weight. Lift your head and pass the plate, this time just don't pay the freight. Am I clear this morning y'all?, Am I clear this morning y'all?, Am I clear this morning y'all? Go up Moses, you've been down too long. You've been down too long, you've been down too long. My people let Pharoah go. You don't need him. You don't need his tricks. You don't need his trinkets. Pharoah doesn't want you, but he needs you. Without you there is no Pharoah. All you have to do to let him go is let him go. Just wake up tomorrow and say "Bye Pharoah" Am I clear this morning y'all?, Am I clear this morning y'all?, Am I clear this morning y'all? You've been down too long, You've been down too long.
